VPN in China: What Works in 2026

Short answer

Standard VPN protocols are blocked in China. VLESS + Reality, which mimics HTTPS traffic, is the most consistently reliable protocol for mainland China access in 2026. Set everything up before you enter China — app stores and config downloads are often blocked inside the country. No protocol guarantees 100% uptime during crackdown periods.

How China's Great Firewall works

The GFW uses deep packet inspection to identify VPN protocol fingerprints and block them in real time. It also maintains blocklists of known VPN server IP addresses.

Standard protocols — OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2 — are easily identified and blocked. VLESS + Reality is significantly harder to fingerprint.

What works: VLESS + Reality

Reality makes VPN traffic look like HTTPS to a real domain. The GFW cannot easily distinguish it from normal web traffic. This is why Outlivion uses it as the default protocol.

Prepare before entering China

This is critical. App stores inside China do not list VPN apps. Foreign apps are often blocked. Import your config at home or in transit.

  • Install the VPN client at home or in Hong Kong/Macau
  • Import your Outlivion config
  • Test on mobile data
  • Save the support link and config link offline
  • Contact support before arrival for current China-specific recommendations

Realistic expectations

VLESS + Reality works well in China for most of the time. During sensitive political dates (National Congress, national holidays) the GFW sometimes escalates blocking. No service can guarantee uninterrupted access.

Speed through the VPN from China to overseas servers is typically 10–50 Mbit/s — sufficient for calls, messaging and most work tasks.

Legal note

Individuals using VPNs for personal purposes in China are rarely prosecuted. Distributing or selling VPNs to Chinese users is illegal. Businesses operating in China should consult local legal advice on enterprise VPN use.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

If you set it up before arrival using VLESS + Reality, it works in most circumstances. Contact support before you go for current server recommendations.

This is unreliable — App Store and Google Play may not show VPN apps. Install before you enter China.

The GFW blocklists are updated continuously. Outlivion rotates server endpoints to stay ahead. If one endpoint is blocked, re-importing the subscription config gets you the current working endpoints.

Re-import the config (requires internet access — use mobile data). Contact support if re-import does not resolve it.
